This means that I am interested in your personal and relational resources and abilities as well as the way in which you understand what has happened to you and what may be leading to current difficulties. Together we will explore the relationships, family patterns and cultural and spiritual beliefs which shape your experience with the aim of understanding the present in context. We will also explore your hopes and dreams for the future so that the way forward links closely to what you hold dear in life.
"Every problem is a frustrated dream" Peter Lang
Alongside my private practice I have worked for over 35 years in the NHS as a Clinical Psychologist and Systemic Psychotherapist so I have experience of working with many different presenting issues. My focus will be primarily on you as a person and what is important to you. Although my stance derives from the critical and liberation psychology tradition, which tends to challenge diagnostic labels and explanations which limit the individual, I know that sometimes psychiatric diagnoses can be very helpful for people. I am experienced in working with a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses using evidence based approaches.
I like to meet with clients twice initially to give both of us a chance to experience the other, to give you a sense of how I work and whether we can usefully work together. On the basis of these initial meetings we will agree how to go forward. Sometimes this brief consultation is enough or we may decide to meet weekly or fortnightly or monthly for a fixed number of sessions before a review.
Sometimes beginning to look at oneself can be challenging, sometimes a relief. My aim is to help you to move from life limiting descriptions to open up and enable choice even in the most difficult circumstances.
